Jahangir Behrouz

A Brief Account of Their Rich Life

Jahangir Behrouz (1926, Mashhad – 2014, London) was a veteran Iranian journalist. He developed a passion for journalism in high school and demonstrated remarkable courage in his profession. His fearlessness in his early years was such that he was arrested several times by security agencies before the age of thirty. His initial reports were published in the Iran newspaper and later in Iran-e Ma. He also founded the Qiyam-e Iran newspaper for a time. One of his most significant journalistic achievements was exposing the secret document of the Iran-US military agreement in 1947, which led to the fall of the government at the time.

In 1969, Behrouz joined the board of directors of the Ayandegan Institute and became the newspaper's editor-in-chief a year later. However, after publishing a critical editorial in the newspaper's 1000th issue, he was dismissed from his position by order of SAVAK. This event was a turning point in his professional life and left a deep wound. Afterward, he dedicated his time to the "Echo of Iran" institute, which, through its English-language publications, was one of the few global news sources on Iran.

According to his son, Dr. Maziar Behrouz, Jahangir Behrouz was a daring, moderate, witty, and humble man who loved books, classical music, and new technologies. After turning seventy, he began writing his memoirs, a portion of which was published in the Ettela'at newspaper. Jahangir Behrouz passed away in London at the age of 88.

Following his death, his esteemed son, Dr. Maziar Behrouz, graciously donated his father's personal and valuable library, consisting of 324 books, to the Central Library of the University of Kurdistan. The University of Kurdistan Supporters Foundation honors this precious gift and will forever cherish the memory of this great journalist.
